Dave Albo, Former Member, Virginia House of Delegates

“The Long Game of Leadership”
Dave Albo
Former Member, Virginia House of Delegates
In politics, success often comes to those willing to stay at the table long enough to get it right. Few know that better than Dave Albo, who represented Northern Virginia in the Virginia House of Delegates for nearly 24 years—including 12 as chairman of the powerful House Courts of Justice Committee.
In this week’s Community Catalysts conversation, Albo shares what it really takes to move complex legislation forward. He recalls how, in 2013, Virginia passed the largest transportation funding package in its history—a solution eight years in the making. As a Republican who opposed raising taxes, Albo wrestled with the tension between principle and practicality, ultimately finding that good governance sometimes demands both.
His reflections are as relevant today as ever. “Just because the other party has a position,” he says, “doesn’t mean it’s stupid automatically—it probably identified a real problem.” In an age when politics rewards quick soundbites, Albo reminds us that the real work of democracy lies in patience, empathy, and precision.
The lesson? Leadership isn’t about always being right—it’s about being willing to work through the details until you get it right.
