What changes when an advocate becomes responsible for an entire community?

“Beyond Advocacy”

Many people enter public service because they care deeply about a particular issue, a particular neighborhood, or a particular group of people.

But what happens once they take the oath of office?

In this week's episode of Community Catalysts, I sit down with Ventura, California Councilmember Liz Campos, whose journey into public service has been shaped by disability, housing insecurity, and decades of community advocacy.

One moment in our conversation especially stayed with me. Liz describes what it felt like after being elected to the city council: instead of being a community voice, she suddenly became just one vote.

It's a tension every elected official eventually encounters. Before taking office, you can advocate passionately for the issues you care about. After taking office, you still care just as deeply, but now progress depends on listening, building relationships, earning the confidence of your colleagues, and balancing the needs of an entire community.

Our conversation explores that transition, along with the ways personal experience can deepen empathy without narrowing a leader's responsibility to serve everyone.

If you've ever wondered what really changes when someone moves from advocacy into governance, I think you'll find "Beyond Advocacy" to be a thoughtful and encouraging conversation.

An Invitation to Share Your Leadership Story

Community Catalysts is built on the belief that some of the most valuable leadership insights are earned quietly, through real service in real communities.

If you serve in a civic leadership role—and you’d be open to sharing hard-won lessons from your own experience—I invite you to consider being a guest on a future episode.

You can learn more and volunteer by completing a brief guest questionnaire at:

Every submission is reviewed personally. Your story may help another leader see their own work more clearly, or feel less alone in the responsibilities they carry.

Thank you for the work you do—and for considering this invitation.
