“Success Is Quiet”
Brooks Williams, City Manager
Ferris, Texas
Every now and then, I come across someone whose words stop me mid-scroll—and make me feel proud all over again to work in and alongside local government.
That’s what happened the first time I read a post by Brooks Williams, the City Manager of Ferris, Texas. Brooks has become one of the most inspiring and widely followed voices on LinkedIn writing about leadership in public service. His posts have this rare combination of precision, poetry, and perspective—equal parts encouragement and accountability.
Here’s a glimpse of his voice from one that especially struck me:
“They won’t write stories about what you prevented.
They won’t measure what didn’t fall apart.
They won’t thank you for choosing function over fanfare.
Because in this line of work, success isn’t a standing ovation.
It’s a city that still runs, a crisis that never came, and a public that never knew how close it got.”
That’s the kind of insight that makes Brooks’s writing stand apart. It’s not self-congratulatory—it’s deeply grounded in service. His words reflect a philosophy that leadership is not about being seen, but about ensuring that the systems and people around you can thrive quietly, dependably, and with integrity.
In our conversation for Community Catalysts, Brooks shared how his writing began as a personal reflection—“therapeutic,” as he put it—and evolved into a source of encouragement for peers who were feeling worn down by criticism or cynicism. His posts have since become rallying points for city and county managers, school administrators, and countless others who know that good governance depends on both competence and heart.
If you spend any time on LinkedIn, I can’t recommend following Brooks Williams highly enough. He’s redefining what it means to speak with pride about public administration—and to remind all of us that government done well is not just effective, it’s noble.
