Topic:  “Who Are We Becoming? Local Identity in a Time of Change"

As communities evolve, so do the questions of who belongs, what’s shared, and how identity is defined. For towns, cities, and school districts shaped by longstanding traditions, shifting demographics can bring both opportunities and tensions.

This month’s Chat opens space for a candid, respectful exploration of how leaders balance honoring a community’s history with embracing new people and perspectives.

  • How do you preserve what’s meaningful without closing the door on what’s possible?
  • When you’ve involved a broader cross-section of residents, did it spark disruption, progress, or something more complex?
  • As definitions of “us” keep shifting, how does that shape the way you show up, listen, and lead?

Past Topics of Local Leadership Chats

"Bridging Dislike"

Navigating personal tensions within your Council, Board, or Team can be one of local leadership's toughest challenges. Let’s candidly discuss ways to keep personal animosity from derailing the important work of governing - you know, “like a bridge over troubled waters.”

"The Mechanics of Trust"

Let’s talk about how civic leaders earn trust, both individually and for our governing boards and councils. From our experiences, we'll share what works and what doesn't. Join us for a conversation about practical ways to build confidence and credibility in our communities.

"Shaping Tomorrow"

What challenges and opportunities do you see right now that could make a lasting impact in your community or organization? Join civic leaders from across the country to discuss priorities and strategies for building resilience and prosperity in the future.

In July 2025, we discussed what leadership requires when safety is at stake—balancing visibility, accessibility, and protection for yourself, your team, and your family. We came together in a supportive space to speak openly and reflect on shared challenges. Together, we considered lessons from lived experiences and explored what training, protocols, or strategies could help leaders feel better prepared.

In May 2025, we discussed how faith inspires service and what guides us in public leadership. We shared how we balance personal conviction and public accountability, and the challenges leaders face when private beliefs meet public responsibility. We explored the civic dimensions of faith in leadership by examining conscience, boundaries, and the weight of serving diverse communities.

In April 2025, we discussed how leaders can unite when words divide. We reflected on the challenges of upholding fairness, strengthening civic trust, and creating belonging in a time when language itself has become a battleground. We shared experiences and ideas about how local leaders can serve the whole community with clarity and care.
