A Governor's advice for local leaders

Otis White on your Day 1 priorities on the Community Catalyst Podcast.
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon

Mark Gordon

Wyoming Governor

From Cowboy to Cow Man

Every week on Community Catalysts, I have the privilege of introducing local leaders to one another. This week, I'm especially honored to welcome a sitting governor into that conversation.

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon is the first governor to join the podcast, and I'm deeply grateful to Brian Farmer, Executive Director of the Wyoming School Boards Association, for making the introduction after I had the privilege of speaking at their annual conference last fall.

What I appreciate most about Governor Gordon is the candor he brought to our conversation. He reflects on the philosophy he learned growing up on a Wyoming ranch, where independence and interdependence aren't competing values but complementary ones. He shares why he believes public education is among government's highest responsibilities and how Wyoming is working to strengthen it through broad community engagement. And he offers practical advice to local leaders on building productive relationships with governors and other state officials, reminding us that the strongest partnerships are often built long before they're needed.

It's a conversation filled with wisdom, humility, and a genuine respect for the work of local leadership. I hope you'll give it a listen, and as always, I'd love to hear what resonates with you.

An Invitation to Share Your Leadership Story

Community Catalysts is built on the belief that some of the most valuable leadership insights are earned quietly, through real service in real communities.

If you serve in a civic leadership role—and you’d be open to sharing hard-won lessons from your own experience—I invite you to consider being a guest on a future episode.

You can learn more and volunteer by completing a brief guest questionnaire at:
www.CatalystGuest.us

Every submission is reviewed personally. Your story may help another leader see their own work more clearly, or feel less alone in the responsibilities they carry.

Thank you for the work you do—and for considering this invitation.
