“Creating a Little Utopia”

For many leaders, service begins with action.

You see a need. You step in. You organize. You deliver. The impact is visible and immediate.

But what happens when the most responsible thing you can do… is step back?

In my latest
Community Catalysts conversation, Tauna Rodarte reflects on that exact turning point. After decades of hands-on nonprofit leadership in Fallbrook, California—working directly with military families, students, and neighbors in need—she moved into elected service on her local high school board. The mission stayed the same. The method changed completely.

School board governance is not about doing the work yourself. It is about setting direction, stewarding public trust, hiring and evaluating the superintendent, and governing for long-term outcomes. For leaders wired to act, that shift can feel disorienting. When do you intervene? When do you hold steady? When does restraint serve the mission better than activity?

Tauna speaks with unusual clarity about that tension. Without giving away the heart of her insights, this conversation explores the quiet discipline of governance, the difference between visibility and impact, and the kind of leadership that strengthens systems rather than personalities.

If you have ever wrestled with the line between doing and governing, this episode may help you see your own leadership role differently.

An Invitation to Share Your Leadership Story

Community Catalysts is built on the belief that some of the most valuable leadership insights are earned quietly, through real service in real communities.

If you serve in a civic leadership role—and you’d be open to sharing hard-won lessons from your own experience—I invite you to consider being a guest on a future episode.

You can learn more and volunteer by completing a brief guest questionnaire at:

Every submission is reviewed personally. Your story may help another leader see their own work more clearly, or feel less alone in the responsibilities they carry.

Thank you for the work you do—and for considering this invitation.
