If you’ve ever felt the pressure of leadership in uncertain times—when the stakes are high, the answers unclear, and the noise deafening—this conversation is for you.

I recently sat down with Speaker Don Scott of the
Virginia House of Delegates for a full-hour dialogue that goes beyond soundbites. We discussed leadership, responsibility, and what it takes to navigate today’s political and economic turbulence without losing sight of the people we serve.

This conversation was recorded live on May 23rd as part of the Spring 2025 Leadership Dialogues, hosted by the
Regional Elected Leaders Initiative (RELI) at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government. I’m grateful to RELI not only for sponsoring this special episode of the Community Catalysts podcast but for their ongoing support of public leaders across Northern Virginia.

Speaker Scott joined us at a critical moment. Federal workforce reductions and funding cuts are sending shockwaves through Virginia’s economy, and local leaders are already seeing the effects on families, on budgets, and on trust in government itself. In response, Speaker Scott created the Emergency Committee on the Impacts of Federal Workforce and Funding Reductions, a bipartisan group charged with delivering actionable recommendations by year’s end.

His assessment?
“We’re at a 10 right now… but this is not the time for panic. It’s the time for bold leadership grounded in analysis.”

What I appreciated most was his clarity. Yes, the situation is serious. But his message wasn’t one of despair—it was about staying focused, asking the right questions, and making decisions rooted in facts, not fear. He reminded us that when everyday people step up, when leaders at every level choose courage over chaos, we can not only hold the line—we can move forward.

This is a real conversation—no pretense, no posturing. Just a deep and necessary reflection on what leadership looks like when everything feels like it’s in flux.
