Election Day: Is It a Tiger?

It's Election Day. And whether you're on the ballot, supporting someone who is, or simply watching the results unfold, there's a good chance you're feeling some stress.

But here's a fascinating question: Does your brain know the difference between a political setback and being chased by a tiger?

According to stress physiologist Dr. Rebecca Heiss, perhaps not as well as we'd like!

For this special Election Day episode of Community Catalysts, Rebecca joins me to explore what's actually happening in our bodies when we experience criticism, uncertainty, disappointment, or fear. And, more importantly, what we can do to respond more thoughtfully and effectively.

We even play a little game called "Tiger or Not a Tiger?" in which I challenge Rebecca with some all-too-familiar situations that local leaders encounter.

This is an extra-long episode, but I think Election Day is an especially appropriate occasion to give yourself a little extra time. Perhaps step away from the news, get away from people, put on your headphones, and take a good long walk while you listen.

You might discover that the stress you're feeling isn't quite what you think it is. And that you have more power over your response than you realize.

Listen now to “Tiger or Not a Tiger?” with Dr. Rebecca Heiss.

Whatever Election Day holds for you, I hope this conversation offers some perspective, encouragement, and a reminder of the importance of taking care of yourself while doing work that matters.

An Invitation to Share Your Leadership Story

Community Catalysts is built on the belief that some of the most valuable leadership insights are earned quietly, through real service in real communities.

If you serve in a civic leadership role—and you’d be open to sharing hard-won lessons from your own experience—I invite you to consider being a guest on a future episode.

You can learn more and volunteer by completing a brief guest questionnaire at:
www.CatalystGuest.us

Every submission is reviewed personally. Your story may help another leader see their own work more clearly, or feel less alone in the responsibilities they carry.

Thank you for the work you do—and for considering this invitation.
