Mayor Deborah Hudson
Wilton, Alabama

"A Leap Into Crisis"

When I spoke recently at the Alabama League of Municipalities annual conference, I met a woman whose story I haven’t stopped thinking about. Her name is Deborah Hudson, and she’s the mayor of Wilton, Alabama—a town of fewer than 600 people that, just over a year ago, had no functioning government.

The prior mayor had just resigned. So had the clerk, utility staff, and most of the council. With too few members to form a quorum, Wilton was frozen.

And then Ms. Hudson walked in to pay her water bill.

What happened next is the heart of this week’s Community Catalysts episode: “A Leap Into Crisis." Mayor Hudson didn’t expect to become mayor that day. But when she heard what was happening, she asked to speak. She sent a résumé, addressed the council, and said simply: Wilton deserves better. Minutes later, she was sworn in.

What followed wasn’t smooth sailing. It was rebuilding—piece by piece. With deep faith and determination, Mayor Hudson restored basic operations, brought people together, and secured the town’s first-ever grant. Along the way, she never lost her guiding belief: “For every situation, there’s a solution.”

This isn’t a story about policy. It’s about rising when everything’s falling. About leading not because you planned to, but because you had to.

If you’ve ever wondered whether real leadership still shows up at the local level, especially when things fall apart, this episode will remind you: it does.

And if you’ve got a story from your own leadership journey—especially about finding better ways to engage your community—I’d love to feature it. Submit here:
