"Unlearning Partisanship"

Councilmember Brenda Kalivianakis

Fountain Hills, Arizona

What happens when loyalty turns into pressure — when the people who helped you win begin telling you exactly how to vote?

That’s the dilemma faced by Councilmember Brenda Kalivianakis of Fountain Hills, Arizona, and the focus of this week’s
Community Catalysts conversation.

Elected in 2022 as part of a conservative majority backed by a powerful local movement, Brenda entered office with solid credentials: former prosecutor, defense attorney, business owner, and member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. She ran on fiscal restraint and accountability, but soon discovered how easily those principles could be twisted into demands for obedience.

She recalls being summoned by community power brokers who insisted she vote their way on a major development — even warning that her political future would be “torpedoed” if she didn’t comply. When she refused, one donor even asked for a refund, saying, “They didn’t get what they paid for.”

That moment became a turning point. Brenda began to see her oath of office — to serve faithfully and impartially — as a commitment to all residents, not just those aligned with her party.

Her story is a reminder that partisanship doesn’t just divide Washington; it can distort the very heart of local governance. Brenda’s candor reveals what it takes to keep integrity intact when political loyalty demands conformity.
