“Leading with Connection"

An Extended Conversation with U.S. Senator Tim Kaine

This is a very special conversation.

Just a few days ago, I had the privilege of speaking with U.S. Senator Tim Kaine in a live, extended conversation as part of the Spring 2025 Leadership Dialogues hosted by RELI—the Regional Elected Leaders Initiative at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government.

The questions I asked came directly from local leaders across Northern Virginia—but they echo the very same concerns I hear from school board members, city councilmembers, and county officials in communities nationwide.

In this candid, unedited hour-long conversation, Senator Kaine reflects on how his years as a City Council member and Mayor of Richmond—and later as Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor and Governor—have shaped his approach to leadership in the U.S. Senate. He offers an unflinching look at the pressures local leaders face today, from the erosion of public trust to the far-reaching effects of shifting federal policies. More than that, he speaks to the courage it takes to lead with humility, rebuild trust where it’s been shaken, and serve with clarity in uncertain times.

This episode is presented in partnership with RELI as part of their ongoing effort to elevate the voices of Northern Virginia’s local leaders—and share their insights with a national audience.

Some leadership lessons are complex. Others are remarkably simple. In my just-published Community Catalysts podcast interview with Ian Coyle, former Chief Administrative Officer of Livingston County, NY, and now President of Pracademic Partners, one lesson stands out: great leaders double down.

Ilryong Moon came to the United States from Korea at 17. He didn’t speak much English. His family had little money. His parents, both undereducated, worked long hours to support their children in a new and unfamiliar country. Ilryong repeated a year of high school just to learn the language. From there, he went on to graduate from Harvard, build a successful law career, and eventually serve for decades on the school board of one of the nation’s largest—and most diverse—school districts.
Insights from the April Local Leadership Chat with Matt Lehrman
By Matt Lehrman April 16, 2025
Last week, local leaders from across the country came together for a 90-minute virtual conversation about the words we use, the values we hold, and the challenges we face. Mayors, council members, and civic officials shared candid insights—not just about policy, but about how everyday language now feels risky, and how they stay grounded in community service. Here’s what they shared.
