“Failing Without Becoming a Failure”

Some Stories Need Room to Breathe

Last week, I shared
Part 1 of my conversation with Wayne Handley, Interim City Manager for the City of Buena Vista, Virginia. A Marine veteran, former Chief of Police, licensed counselor, and founder of Blue Oak Wellness, Wayne reflected on a lesson that has shaped his leadership for decades: sometimes the mission is team welfare.

When we began recording, I expected a thoughtful conversation about leadership, trust, and organizational culture.

What I didn't expect was that one particular story would cause me to change my plans for the episode.

As Wayne reflected on an experience from early in his law enforcement career, it became clear that we had arrived at something deeper than leadership advice or a collection of best practices. We were talking about the kind of moment that quietly shapes a person's understanding of responsibility, accountability, and how leaders influence the lives of others.

Some experiences cannot be adequately summarized. They have to be heard directly from the person who lived them.

That's why this became a two-part conversation.

In Part 2, Wayne shares a story that has remained with him for more than two decades and explores how it influenced his approach to leadership, mentorship, trust, and the development of others. Along the way, he offers a powerful reminder that leadership is not about status or authority. It is about the people entrusted to our care.

I hope you'll listen.
