What Happens When the Reporter Gets the Questions?

“Seeing Local Government from the Outside”
Local journalists ask public officials tough questions all the time.
For this week’s Community Catalysts, I had the opportunity to turn the tables.
What actually makes something “newsworthy”?
When a governing body spends months thoughtfully working through a complicated issue, but 30 seconds of conflict erupts at the final meeting, which one becomes the story?
How much does the business model of journalism, including clicks, subscriptions, and attention, influence what gets covered?
And when we talk about “accountability,” is government the only one that should be held accountable? What responsibility belongs to citizens themselves?
My guest is Mary Ramsey, Local Government Accountability Reporter for The Charlotte Observer. I appreciated her willingness to engage these questions directly, including pushing back on some of my assumptions.
We also explored what Mary sees from her seat that most citizens don’t: the time elected officials devote to public service, the realities facing local newsrooms, and what years of watching local government up close have taught her about good leadership.
It’s a candid conversation from the other side of the reporter’s notebook, and one I think local leaders will find especially interesting.

An Invitation to Share Your Leadership Story
Community Catalysts is built on the belief that some of the most valuable leadership insights are earned quietly, through real service in real communities.
If you serve in a civic leadership role—and you’d be open to sharing hard-won lessons from your own experience—I invite you to consider being a guest on a future episode.
You can learn more and volunteer by completing a brief guest questionnaire at:www.CatalystGuest.us
Every submission is reviewed personally. Your story may help another leader see their own work more clearly, or feel less alone in the responsibilities they carry.
Thank you for the work you do—and for considering this invitation.
