What Can One Council Member Really Accomplish?
What if the most consequential thing you could accomplish as a city council member didn't require a Council vote?
That's the intriguing question at the heart of this week's Community Catalysts.
I'm delighted to welcome back Charlie "Chuck" Frye Jr., Vice Mayor of Fredericksburg, Virginia. When we first spoke on April 9, 2025, he shared the remarkable story of his community's struggle over a historic slave auction block and the conversations that helped Fredericksburg find a way forward.
This time, Chuck tells a very different story.
He arrived on City Council with a handwritten plan in a composition book. Something had happened in his neighborhood that he couldn't ignore, and he was determined to do something about it.
But here's what makes his experience so relevant to local elected officials: One council member can't make decisions for the entire city. That doesn't mean one council member can't get something important started.
Chuck couldn't simply direct city staff to implement his idea. Yet what began in that composition book has now become a Virginia state law, signed by the governor just a few months ago.
How did he make that happen? And what might his experience teach us about the difference between the authority to make decisions and the ability to set meaningful change in motion?
I hope you'll listen to this week's conversation with Chuck. It's an invitation to consider what you might accomplish, not by exercising more power, but by making better use of the influence you already have.
