“Optimism on the Oath”

There are leaders who arrive polished.

And there are leaders who arrive real.

Trustee Maiaika Velazquez of the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District in California didn’t set out to run a campaign. At 4:49 p.m. on the final filing day, she submitted her papers and discovered there were no other candidates. Under California law, she was elected in lieu of election—no campaign, no organized effort behind her candidacy. What she brought with her instead was something else entirely: lived experience.

She has known economic strain. She has advocated for her special needs son across conference tables where policy can feel impersonal. She understands what it means to say, “We’re not just a file.”

Yet, what struck me most in our conversation was not hardship. It was joy.

Maiaika radiates optimism. Not naïveté. Not denial of complexity. But a grounded belief that governance can be human. Those systems can improve. That serving from the inside matters.

She speaks openly about feeling imposter syndrome, about learning the language of board policy, about finding her stride. And she does it with an energy that feels contagious. You can hear someone discovering that she is exactly where she is meant to be.

At a time when public life often feels heavy, her leadership feels light in the best possible way, hopeful, forward-moving, and deeply rooted in her community.

This episode left me deeply inspired. I suspect it will do the same for you.

An Invitation to Share Your Leadership Story

Community Catalysts is built on the belief that some of the most valuable leadership insights are earned quietly, through real service in real communities.

Governing in the Silly Season
By Matt Lehrman March 4, 2026
In local government, you can feel it when it arrives. Speeches at council or board meetings grow sharper. Social media clips get shorter and more theatrical. Questions from the dais sometimes sound less like inquiry and more like messaging. The focus can shift from working with colleagues to signaling to voters.
