"Decency, Fortitude, Community"

I first met Mayor Brian Vincent over two years ago while facilitating a courageous discussion on the challenges of community leadership at the Virginia Municipal League’s Mayors Institute.

His thoughtful approach—deeply rooted in Stoicism—immediately stood out. He struck me as someone with remarkable depth, and I craved a conversation beyond mere conference kibitzing. Truthfully, I experience that feeling often—which is exactly why I created this podcast: a chance to connect more deeply with the fascinating and insightful people I meet in my travels as a civic facilitator and keynote speaker.

It’s common to hear a mayor speak about high ideals or how their town bridges its history with its future. But Mayor Vincent is anything but common. When he talks about “decency, fortitude, and community” in Farmville, you quickly discover the profound influence of his father, a fallen U.S. Army officer. His father’s service and sacrifice embody the power of leading not with force but with quiet strength and unwavering dedication to others—a painful yet timeless lesson in leadership from which we can all learn.

Join me for a deeply meaningful conversation on this week's Community Catalyst podcast.

It’s no secret that public meetings have changed. What once came through face-to-face dialogue now too often shows up as sharp online opposition—frequently anonymous, often personal, and increasingly disconnected from the full context of the work.

What does leadership look like when simply serving your community carries real risk? How do local leaders stay focused, stay visible, and stay true to their purpose when threats—both direct and ambient—keep rising?

In the worlds of local government and community service, we’re constantly trying to do good. We serve missions, constituents, and causes that matter. But here’s the harder question: What happens when doing good comes into conflict with doing right?
