“Finding Clarity Amid the Clamor”

In my newest Community Catalysts interview, Kevin Lyons—co-founder and CEO of FlashVote—shares a truth that hits home for anyone in local leadership: When it comes to public input, volume isn’t the same as representation.

Social media, public meetings, angry emails—these have become the dominant channels for civic engagement. But what if the people you're hearing from most aren’t the ones who reflect your whole community? Kevin’s work helps local governments gather quick, reliable feedback from hundreds of regular residents—not just those who show up or shout the loudest. It’s not about silencing strong opinions. It’s about hearing beyond them.

One striking insight: in nearly 70% of cases, public sentiment gathered through FlashVote was the opposite of what leaders thought they were hearing through traditional channels. Think about that. Seventy percent.

Kevin’s point is powerful: leaders aren’t ignoring the community—they’re often just flying blind. When the only feedback you get comes from a vocal few, you risk making decisions that serve the noisy, not the many.

This episode isn’t a tech pitch—it’s a conversation about what good governance looks like when trust is fragile and every decision matters. You’ll come away rethinking how you gather input, how you define fairness, and how you lead.

Governing in the Silly Season
By Matt Lehrman March 4, 2026
In local government, you can feel it when it arrives. Speeches at council or board meetings grow sharper. Social media clips get shorter and more theatrical. Questions from the dais sometimes sound less like inquiry and more like messaging. The focus can shift from working with colleagues to signaling to voters.
