“Engagement with Purpose"

Community engagement is supposedly straightforward. Ask for input, hold a meeting, listen.

But what if the real work is deciding when to engage, how prepared you are when you do, and what you bring into the room?

In this week’s episode of
Community Catalysts, I sit down with Christian Dorsey—former chair of the Arlington County Board—to explore what engagement looks like in practice, through the lens of one of the most high-profile local decisions in recent memory: Amazon’s choice to locate HQ2 in Arlington.

In a moment with national attention and real local consequences, leaders had to act before full engagement was possible, then return with real information, clear tradeoffs, and a willingness to be tested.

Christian shares how timing, transparency, and follow-through determine whether engagement builds trust or erodes it—and why staying present in everyday community life keeps leadership grounded.

This one offers a practical lens on how engagement actually works.

This episode is part of our ongoing series made possible by the
Regional Elected Leaders Initiative (RELI) at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government, supporting local leaders as they navigate complex challenges through shared learning and collaboration.

An Invitation to Share Your Leadership Story

Community Catalysts is built on the belief that some of the most valuable leadership insights are earned quietly, through real service in real communities.

If you serve in a civic leadership role—and you’d be open to sharing hard-won lessons from your own experience—I invite you to consider being a guest on a future episode.

You can learn more and volunteer by completing a brief guest questionnaire at:
www.CatalystGuest.us

Every submission is reviewed personally. Your story may help another leader see their own work more clearly, or feel less alone in the responsibilities they carry.

Thank you for the work you do—and for considering this invitation.
